THCa flower does not have an expiration date in the way milk does. It has a degradation curve. Stored well, flower stays excellent for a year or more. Stored badly, it can lose its character in a few weeks.

The Four Enemies of Fresh Flower

1. Light

UV exposure is the fastest way to ruin flower. Light breaks down both cannabinoids and terpenes, and a clear jar on a sunny counter will do more damage in a month than a year in a dark drawer. This is why sealed, opaque packaging is standard — our 4g Mylar-sealed flower blocks light completely.

2. Heat

Heat drives slow, ambient decarboxylation. THCa gradually converts to Delta-9, which then oxidizes toward CBN. Heat also accelerates terpene evaporation. A hot car is the single worst place to leave flower.

3. Air

Oxygen oxidizes cannabinoids and carries volatile terpenes away. Every time a container is opened, fresh oxygen enters and aromatics escape. Smaller headspace means slower degradation.

4. Humidity

This one cuts both ways:

  • Too dry (below 55% RH): Flower becomes brittle, trichomes shatter, smoke turns harsh.
  • Too humid (above 65% RH): Mold and mildew risk. This is a genuine safety issue, not just a quality one.

The target range is 55–62% relative humidity.

Realistic Timelines

Assuming sealed, cool, dark storage in the correct humidity range:

  • 0–6 months: Peak. Full terpene expression, full potency.
  • 6–12 months: Very good. Some aromatic softening; potency largely intact.
  • 12–18 months: Noticeable terpene loss. Still perfectly usable.
  • 18+ months: Meaningful cannabinoid degradation and a flatter profile.

Poorly stored flower can hit that 18-month state in under three months.

How to Store It Properly

  • Keep it sealed. Reseal Mylar fully, or transfer to an airtight glass jar.
  • Keep it dark. A drawer, cabinet, or opaque container.
  • Keep it cool. Room temperature, 60–70°F. Stable matters more than cold.
  • Use a humidity pack. A 58% or 62% two-way pack holds the range automatically.
  • Minimize headspace. Size the container to the amount you have.
  • Do not grind in advance. Ground flower has vastly more surface area exposed to air.

What Not to Do

  • Do not refrigerate. Temperature swings cause condensation, and condensation causes mold.
  • Do not freeze. Frozen trichomes become brittle and snap off when handled.
  • Do not use plastic bags. Static pulls trichomes off the flower and onto the bag wall.
  • Do not store near heat sources. Windowsills, appliances, vehicle interiors.

How to Tell Flower Has Turned

Trust your senses. Faded aroma, a dusty or hay-like smell, crumbling texture, or a harsh smoke all point to age. Any sign of mold — white fuzz, gray patches, a musty basement smell — means discard it. Do not attempt to salvage moldy flower.

A Note on Pre-Rolls and Shake

Pre-ground formats degrade faster because of surface area. Sealed jar formats like our 60-count pre-roll jars help, but the same rules apply: keep the jar closed, cool, and dark between uses.
