Few strains carry the reputation Fire OG does. It sits near the top of the OG Kush family tree and has been a benchmark for indica-dominant flower for well over a decade. Here is where it comes from and what defines it.
The Lineage
Fire OG is widely documented as a cross of OG Kush × SFV OG Kush — making it, essentially, OG bred back into itself for concentration of the traits that made the family famous.
To understand Fire OG you have to understand its parents:
- OG Kush is the foundational West Coast cultivar. Its own origins are genuinely disputed — common accounts point to a Chemdawg cross with a Hindu Kush landrace, but the true parentage has never been definitively settled. What is not disputed is its influence: OG Kush appears somewhere in the ancestry of an enormous share of modern cultivars.
- SFV OG Kush is a San Fernando Valley phenotype selection from OG Kush, refined for sharper pine and fuel character and a more consistent structure.
Crossing the two doubled down on the OG expression rather than diluting it.
The Name
The "Fire" is usually attributed to the red-orange pistils that thread through the buds at maturity, which give well-grown flower a look of glowing embers against dense green. The strain is typically classified as indica-dominant, commonly cited around a 70/30 split.
Terpene Profile
Fire OG's aroma is unmistakable to anyone familiar with the OG family:
- Myrcene — earthy, musky, the heavy base note
- Limonene — sharp citrus running through the top
- Caryophyllene — black pepper and spice
- Pinene — the resinous pine that defines OG lineage
The combined result is the classic "gas" or fuel character — pine and diesel up front, citrus underneath, pepper on the finish.
Structure and Appearance
Fire OG produces dense, tightly packed buds with heavy trichome coverage and the signature orange pistils. The density is a genuine quality marker in this cultivar — loose, airy Fire OG generally indicates a grow that did not express the genetics fully.
Why It Endures
Strain trends move fast. Dessert and candy profiles have dominated the last several years. Fire OG has stayed relevant because it does something those strains do not: it delivers a pungent, resinous, unmistakably traditional profile that a large share of experienced consumers still prefer.
It is also a reliable producer of trichomes, which makes it a favorite for concentrate and infused-product work.

A Note on Strain Names
Cannabis genetics are poorly standardized. The same name can refer to meaningfully different plants from different breeders, and phenotype variation within a single cultivar is real. Treat strain names as a strong indicator of character — not a guarantee of identical chemistry. The COA and terpene panel will always tell you more than the name.
